Note the time change from 4:00 to 2:00.

Ruchira Datta from The Berkeley Phylogenomics Group will present an overview of phylogenomics, a discipline of bioinformatics which uses multiple sequence alignments and phylogenetic trees to predict the functions of genes. For more details, here is a paper from Ruchira on the Phylofacts Orthology Group Prediction web server (PHOG) a novel algorithm in phylogenomics which she helped develop.

In addition to her work on PHOG, Doctor Datta holds a PhD in Mathematics, studying game theory and has worked as a software engineer at Google.

Agenda:

2:00-2:30 - Networking
2:30-3:00 - Dr. Datta presents "Phylogenomics"
3:00-3:15 - Break/Discussion
3:15-4:00 - Lightning talks

We will have lightning talks at this forum, so please bring a brief (10 minute) presentation on a topic that you want to share with the group. We should have time for as many as 4 talks, so let Doug know if you are planning on presenting one. Lightning talk slots will be given on a first requested basis. Powerpoint slides on a thumb drive to accompany your talk are optional.

Blogging is allowed at this event. Please see the BayBIFX blog policy for more details.

Thanks

Hope to see you all there!

    •  The topic was interesting. The people were interesting, friendly, and welcoming. I was able to understand the gist of the presentation although it is a bit removed from my field, and learn something. There seemed to be a good mix of people in very closely related fields and people in slightly different fields. Plenty of good conversations sprang up. I also learned about other, related scientific groups from Doug.
    •  I agree with the comments that the talk could have gone longer. Please continue to provide feedback as we try to balance talk time and networking opportunities.
    •  Excellent presentation. There were a few slides which got cut due to time constraints which could put some later findings in better context, but - overall very good presentation!
    •  It is an important topic, well presented by a very bright researcher. My only complaint is that it would be have been more comprehensible to me if she had more time to go into details.
    •  Good crash-course in modern computational DNA analysis techniques .
